Pogue (formerly Pokey)

Pogue (formerly Pokey) is settling in wonderfully in his new home.  His new setter sister Lily (also an OESR adoptee) is a wonderful playmate and is actually wearing this guy out!.  New dogmommy Shannon is having to get used to early mornings filled with puppy barking!!

Introducing POKEY, a four month old deaf puppy surrendered to rescue by his breeder.  He is a smart, feisty boy and an absolute delight. Pokey is a fast learner and doesn't let his deafness slow him down. He already knows many hand signs and is learning more every day. He is very friendly and hasn't met a person or a dog that he doesn't like. Pokey currently weighs about 20lbs and will probably top out at 50-60lbs as an adult.

Pokey needs a home with another playful dog. He is very active and curious and would greatly benefit from a doggie companion to show him the ropes and play with him. He is cat friendly and loves to curl up and clean out kitty ears. He is, however, still a young exuberant puppy and is more than happy to pounce on a passing cat and try to wrestle with them. Pokey loves to ride in the car, is crate trained, house-broken (with a pet door), and is learning to walk on a leash. He needs additional obedience classes and would probably enjoy some rally or tracking; he has a very keen sense of smell. Pokey would need positive reinforcement training classes; we use "thumbs up" instead of a clicker with great success.

Like any puppy, Pokey loves to explore the world around him. Since he has no hands, this means that everything new goes into his mouth. He needs constant supervision and lots of "approved" toys to keep him entertained. Regular exercise will help keep his energy levels down. Pokey loves to be with his people. Like many deaf dogs, he wants to keep his foster family in eyesight and will follow you everywhere. He likes to lay his head on your lap and curls up next to you in a little ball to take a nap.

Due to his deafness, Pokey cannot be trained to an electric fence so his adopter must have a physical fence.  He
